Biogas is a form of biofuel that utilizes a system of collecting waste from agricultural sources and processing them to produce a mixture of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3). Utilising the process of anaerobic digestion, otherwise known as fermentation, waste is left to decompose artificially (with an airtight digester tank) or naturally (in landfills). The gases generated from this system are harvested as Biogas.

The converted raw material is as combustible as regular fossil fuel, which means it serves as a perfect alternative to petrol and gas. It can be used as fuel for automobiles, power generators and heating needs.
There are many sources from which biogas can be drawn. From energy crops such as corn, to sewage – each source generates a different yield.
Once compressed, Biogas becomes even more versatile as biomethane. Biomethane is the refined version of Biogas and is safer for large-scale, commercial consumption.

A number of alternatives have been explored (or are currently under development). Biogas currently stands as the most realistic substitute for fossil fuel, based on cost, ease of production and versatility.
